.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman made an appearance at Alibaba Group’s annual conference in Hangzhou    on On December 10^th , 2010.  he appeal to small- and medium-sized business owners in China to support protection of intellectual property, saying that poor enforcement now affects Chinese companies, too.

Speaking as a guest of Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma at the conference, Huntsman joined a lineup of speakers in complimenting Ma on his success, calling his story the “Chinese Dream” and praising him for innovation.

Huntsman told the audience that the relationship between U.S. and China today is one of “mutual benefit” rather than opposition, and that the relationship will be “the largest trading and commercial relationship anywhere in the world.”

The ambassador said that openness in the U.S. gave birth to a flurry of new technologies in the 1970s and revitalized the economy, and encouraged openness in China. He said China is now an innovative country and that intellectual-property protection is no longer “a one-way street,” and encouraged Chinese businesses to unite and recognize that the protection of intellectual property leads to more innovation.

He also said freedom of information is a priority. “Freedom of information benefits everyone throughout the world and the Internet is vital in that regard,” he said, but didn’t directly say anything about China’s Internet controls. He did, however, acknowledge that the U.S. government isn’t always happy with coverage of U.S. policies in the media, including on Chinese blogs, but that President Barack Obama believes “the more freely information flows, the stronger society is,” Huntsman said.

“Freedom of information benefits everyone throughout the world,” he added, “and the Internet is vital in that regard.”
